Plant City requires a Business Tax Receipt (BTR) and home occupation approval for any business operated from a residence. Application filed with the Planning and Zoning Division; no external evidence of business activity permitted.
Plant City Code Chapter 110 (Business Tax) requires every person engaging in business within city limits to obtain a Local Business Tax Receipt before operating, including home-based businesses. The Land Development Code permits home occupations as accessory uses in residential districts provided: business is conducted entirely within the dwelling or an enclosed accessory structure; no more than 25% of floor area is used; no non-resident employees work on-site; no external alteration of residential appearance; no customer traffic exceeding normal residential patterns; no outdoor storage of materials or equipment; and no manufacturing, repair of vehicles, or similar uses. Plant City also requires Hillsborough County BTR for most businesses. Renewed annually by September 30.
Operating without BTR: $250 fine plus back taxes owed. Zoning violation (non-conforming home occupation): daily fines through Code Enforcement. Repeat violations may trigger revocation.
