Backyard composting is allowed in Charleston County, and the county runs a large composting facility processing nearly all landfill yard waste. Yard debris must be set out properly for collection; the county also partners on free regional food-scrap drop-off composting.
Charleston County actively supports composting and does not prohibit backyard compost piles kept free of nuisance conditions like odor or vermin. The county's Environmental Management compost facility in West Ashley processes 100% of the yard waste accepted at the landfill, roughly 75,000 tons a year, and sells finished compost. For collection, yard waste should be prepared per your provider's rules: leaves, twigs, weeds and grass clippings bagged, and tree limbs cut to about 4-foot lengths and 4-inch diameter, stacked curbside no earlier than two days before pickup. A regional food-scrap drop-off program lets residents compost food waste free with sign-up.
Improperly prepared or early-placed yard waste may be skipped or cited under solid-waste/nuisance rules; a compost pile that creates odor, vermin, or overgrowth can be declared a nuisance.
