Anchorage limits grass and weeds to 12 inches under AMC 15.20 nuisance code. Taller growth on improved lots triggers abatement. Natural-area and wetland parcels may be exempt with a registered landscape plan.
AMC Title 15 Chapter 20 defines overgrown vegetation as a public nuisance when grass or weeds exceed 12 inches on improved residential or commercial lots. Code Enforcement inspects on complaint and issues a 10-day notice to abate. The short Anchorage growing season (mid-May to mid-September) means enforcement concentrates in July and August. Exemptions exist for undeveloped lots over 40,000 square feet, designated wetlands, and natural-landscape parcels where the owner has filed a registered landscape plan with Planning. Fireweed and native grasses in approved naturalized plantings are not counted toward the 12-inch limit. Boulevard strips between sidewalk and street must still be mowed by the adjacent owner regardless of lot status.
10-day abatement notice. Municipal mowing costs typically 200-400 dollars plus 75 dollar administrative fee, liened to the property.
