Mecklenburg County requires grass and weeds on improved residential lots to be kept below 12 inches. Code Enforcement issues notices and can abate overgrown lots at owner expense after a 10-day cure period.
The Mecklenburg County Code of Ordinances Chapter 10 and the county Weed Ordinance authorize Code Enforcement to declare a lot a public nuisance when grass or weeds exceed 12 inches on developed residential parcels. After a written notice to the owner of record, the owner has 10 days to mow. If uncorrected, the county contracts abatement and places a lien on the property for mowing cost plus administrative fee. Vacant parcels in natural or undeveloped state are generally exempt if not adjacent to improved residential property.
Abatement costs typically $200-$500 per cut plus $100 administrative fee, assessed as a lien on the property tax bill. Repeat violators may face escalating civil penalties.
