San Joaquin County enforces property maintenance and weed abatement standards through Code Enforcement for unincorporated areas. Overgrown vegetation creating fire hazards or public nuisances is subject to abatement. Contact Code Enforcement at (209) 468-3121.
SJC Ordinance Title 6, Division 3 (Public Order and Nuisances) addresses overgrown vegetation and property maintenance in unincorporated areas. Properties with uncontrolled weeds, tall grass, or vegetation creating a fire hazard, attracting pests, or constituting a public nuisance are subject to abatement proceedings. The County may issue notices to property owners and, if not corrected, perform the abatement work and bill the owner. Rural and agricultural parcels have different standards than residential subdivisions. The California Fire Code (adopted by SJC Ordinance 4615) requires defensible space maintenance (100 ft clearance from structures) in State Responsibility Areas. Contact Code Enforcement at (209) 468-3121.
Nuisance vegetation: notice of abatement, owner-performed or county-performed work. County weed abatement charges billed to property owner.
