Jefferson Parish requires grass and weeds on all property to be kept below eight (8) inches. In June the Parish Council cut the limit from 12 inches to 8. It applies to both occupied and unoccupied lots parishwide.
The parish Department of Inspection and Code Enforcement cites any property, occupied or vacant, where grass or weeds exceed eight inches. Occupied properties are handled by the Property Maintenance Section and vacant/abandoned lots by the Weed Control Section, but the eight-inch standard is the same. The height was lowered from twelve inches to eight inches by Parish Council vote effective for the mowing season. Inside incorporated cities such as Kenner, Gretna, Harahan and Westwego, the city's own ordinance controls, not the parish standard.
Notice of violation with a compliance period; unresolved cases go to the Bureau of Administrative Adjudication, which sets fines, hearing costs, and can order parish abatement billed to the owner.
