Reno Municipal Code 8.12 requires weeds and grass to be kept under 6 inches on improved lots. Noxious weeds and dry vegetation constitute a fire hazard and public nuisance, subject to abatement under RMC 8.12.020.
The Reno Code Enforcement Division inspects for tall grass and weeds year-round, with peak activity in summer when dry vegetation increases wildfire risk. Violations start with a courtesy notice giving 10 days to cut. If unaddressed, the city may contract abatement and lien the property. In WUI neighborhoods, defensible space standards (30 ft cleared of flammable vegetation) override the standard 6-inch rule. Rural-zoned parcels over 1 acre have exemptions for native and pasture grass.
Notice: 10 days to cut. City abatement: labor cost plus 250 dollars administrative fee. Repeat offender: misdemeanor up to 500 dollars.
