Salt Lake City enforces a 12-inch maximum grass/weed height under Municipal Code Β§9.20. Violations start at $150. Exemptions exist for approved water-wise and natural landscapes.
Under SLC Municipal Code Β§9.20.010, grass, weeds, and vegetation (excluding cultivated landscape, ornamental grasses, trees, and gardens) may not exceed 12 inches. Park strips, front yards, and side yards visible from the public right-of-way are the focus of enforcement. The ordinance specifically exempts designed water-wise and naturalistic landscapes β homeowners with tall ornamental grasses (e.g., little bluestem, switchgrass) in an intentional landscape design are not violating the ordinance. Complaints are investigated by SLC Civil Enforcement. Notice gives 10 days to mow; non-compliance leads to city mowing the property and billing the owner plus a 25% administrative surcharge as a lien under Β§9.20.050.
Civil penalty: $150 first offense, $300 second, $500 third. City abatement: mowing cost plus 25% admin fee billed as lien.
