Manhattan supports native plantings through NYC Parks, GreenThumb, and DEP stormwater programs. There is no mandate to plant natives on private property, but state-listed invasive species must be avoided.
New York County encourages native plantings through a variety of city programs rather than through a private property mandate. NYC Parks and the Natural Areas Conservancy maintain restoration projects in Central Park, Inwood Hill Park, and Manhattans other natural areas, emphasizing native species such as white oak, tulip tree, eastern redbud, and native wildflowers. The GreenThumb program supports over 550 community gardens citywide, many in Manhattan, and provides native seed and plant giveaways. DEPs Green Infrastructure program often requires native or noninvasive species in bioswales and rain gardens built as part of stormwater management. Private homeowners face no native plant mandate, but the state DEC prohibited plants list (6 NYCRR Part 575) bars sale and planting of invasive species such as Japanese barberry and Norway maple. Landmarked properties may face LPC review for yard plantings visible from the street.
