No county rule; cities and townships require owners to keep trees and vegetation from obstructing sidewalks, driveways and streets. Holland Charter Township's Property Maintenance Code requires trimming any branch or dying-tree portion that blocks passage or threatens people or property.
Ottawa County does not regulate private-tree trimming; the duty comes from your city or township property-maintenance code. Holland Charter Township added IPMC section 302.11 (Yards), making every owner responsible for keeping bushes, shrubs, trees and other vegetation from obstructing a sidewalk, walkway, driveway or street, or causing exterior damage to structures. The City of Holland requires branches over a public sidewalk or street to clear a minimum height above grade and owners to remove dead branches menacing pedestrians. Right-of-way and street trees are city-controlled; check with the city before trimming a tree in the public terrace.
Municipal civil infraction under the property-maintenance code; the municipality may order abatement and bill or specially assess the owner for trimming that ignores a compliance notice.
