Tree trimming on private property in Wayne County, Michigan generally does not require a permit for trees owned by the property owner. However, street trees located in the public right-of-way (between sidewalk and curb) are typically owned by the city and require a permit from the local forestry or DPW department before trimming. Detroit's General Services Department manages street trees, and unauthorized trimming can result in fines.
