Livonia property owners must maintain trees so limbs do not obstruct streets, sidewalks, or sight lines. The city trims street trees while owners handle private trees.
Under the Livonia city code, every property owner must trim or remove limbs that encroach on public sidewalks to a vertical clearance of 8 feet and over public streets to 13 feet 6 inches. Trees at corner lots must be trimmed up from 2.5 feet to 8 feet within the sight triangle so drivers can see approaching traffic. The Department of Public Services maintains street trees within the right-of-way, including those planted as part of Livonias urban forestry program, and handles permits for removing healthy street trees. Private yard trees are the homeowners responsibility. Pruning during emerald ash borer season is restricted per MDARD guidance to help slow the spread of EAB across Wayne County ash trees.
