Livonia prohibits noxious weeds and unchecked weedy vegetation taller than 8 inches, with inspection notices, abatement, and tax lien recovery under state law.
Livonias weed ordinance implements Michigans Noxious Weed Act (PA 359 of 1941, MCL 247.61 et seq.) by designating the Director of Inspection as the citys noxious weed commissioner. Common noxious weeds in southeast Michigan include Canada thistle, ragweed, wild carrot, poison ivy, and purple loosestrife. When weeds or unkempt vegetation exceed 8 inches, the city issues a written notice; if the owner does not cut and remove within the compliance window, the city contracts abatement. Abatement costs plus an administrative fee are assessed as a tax lien under MCL 247.64. Owners who repeatedly violate can be charged a civil infraction. Native plant and pollinator gardens can be registered with the planning department for exemption if maintained as a designed landscape. Contact Inspection at (734) 466-2655.
