Arlington Heights, IL Landscaping Rules: Water Restrictions (2026)

Arlington Heights receives its water supply from Lake Michigan through the Northwest Suburban Municipal Joint Action Water Agency (NSMJAWA). Under normal conditions, the Village does not impose mandatory watering schedules or restrictions on residential lawn irrigation. Unlike municipalities in water-scarce regions, northeastern Illinois generally receives adequate precipitation to support residential landscaping. However, the Village retains authority to implement temporary water use restrictions during drought conditions, water main breaks, or supply emergencies. When restrictions are enacted, they typically follow an odd/even address-based schedule limiting watering days. Residents are encouraged to water lawns in early morning hours to reduce evaporation and waste. The Village does not offer water conservation rebate programs for turf replacement or rain barrel installation. Automatic irrigation systems must be properly maintained to prevent water waste from broken heads or runoff onto sidewalks and streets.
