Allentown has no formal dark-sky ordinance, but its zoning code requires all light sources to be diffused so the bulb is not directly visible from streets, sidewalks, dwellings, or adjacent lots. Flashing and strobe lighting are banned except seasonal holiday lights (Oct 25–Jan 10).
Because Lehigh County does not zone, Allentown Zoning Ordinance §1317.02.K (Light and Glare Control) sets outdoor-lighting standards at the county seat. All light sources, including signs, must be properly diffused with a translucent cover so the lighting element is not directly visible from streets, public sidewalks, dwellings, or adjacent lots; hanging five or more bare 40-watt-plus bulbs along a public street or property is prohibited. Flashing, flickering, and strobe lighting are banned, with an exception for seasonal holiday lights displayed between October 25th and January 10th. City-owned or utility street lighting is exempt. These provisions function as Allentown's practical dark-sky protections even without a dedicated dark-sky code.
Non-diffused, glaring, or flashing lighting is a zoning-performance violation; after notice the Zoning Officer may require the use be corrected or suspended within 60 days.
