Jackson Code Ch. 130 and Hinds County nuisance ordinances prohibit abandoned or inoperable vehicles. MS Code Β§63-23-1 et seq. governs abandoned vehicle removal. Notice required before towing.
Mississippi state law (MS Code Β§63-23-1 through Β§63-23-13) defines abandoned motor vehicles and establishes removal procedures for public property. Jackson's code prohibits storing inoperable, unregistered, or dismantled vehicles on private property visible from the street (Code of Ordinances Ch. 86 nuisance provisions). Vehicles must be in an enclosed garage or screened behind an opaque fence. On public streets, vehicles left more than 48-72 hours may be tagged and towed after notice to the registered owner. Flat tires, expired tags, or significant damage can classify a vehicle as inoperable/abandoned. Hinds County Sheriff's Office enforces in unincorporated areas. Vehicles actively being repaired may be exempt with documentation. After impoundment, owners have statutory notice periods before vehicles are sold at auction to satisfy liens.
Notice period 10-30 days typical. Towing and storage $150-$500 at owner expense. Jackson nuisance fines $100-$500. Unrecovered vehicles sold at auction under Β§63-23-9.
