Abandoned vehicles are governed by Michigan state law, MCL 257.252a. A vehicle left on public property for at least 48 hours, or on private property without the owner's consent, is deemed abandoned and can be tagged, towed and sold.
Michigan's abandoned-vehicle process applies statewide, including Ottawa County, under MCL 257.252a. A vehicle is 'abandoned' if it sits on private property without the owner's consent, or on public property for at least 48 hours (18 hours on a state trunkline if plated). The Sheriff or local police may affix a written notice, then have a towing agency take the vehicle into custody, notify the Secretary of State, and, after the owner's redemption/hearing period, sell it at public sale. On private property, the property owner may have a local towing agency remove the vehicle after notice to police.
Abandoning a vehicle is a civil infraction with a $50.00 civil fine; the owner also pays accrued towing and storage fees, and the vehicle may be sold at public auction.
