Sedgwick County does not authorize residents to paint public curbs; curb markings on county roads are official traffic-control devices installed only by Public Works. Painting a public curb yourself is unauthorized. Incorporated cities control markings on their own streets.
Curb color markings (red, yellow, white) are traffic-control devices regulated under the Kansas adoption of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (K.S.A. 8-2003), and only the road authority may place them. In unincorporated Sedgwick County, that authority is the county Public Works Department on county roads and KDOT on state highways; residents are not permitted to paint or alter public curbs. There is no county ordinance letting property owners paint address numbers or 'no parking' markings on the public curb. Within incorporated cities, the city public-works department controls curb markings on city streets.
Painting or defacing a public curb or unauthorized traffic marking is prohibited; unauthorized markings may be removed and the person held responsible under state traffic-control-device law.
