Sedgwick County's Chapter 19 Nuisance Code makes grass or rank vegetation over 18 inches on unincorporated property a nuisance. Separately, Kansas Noxious Weed Law (K.S.A. 2-1314) legally requires every landowner to eradicate state-declared noxious weeds.
Two distinct rules apply. (1) The county Nuisance Code (Chapter 19) treats grass or rank weeds over 18 inches as an abatable nuisance, enforced by MABCD Neighborhood Inspections. (2) Kansas Noxious Weed Law imposes a separate statewide legal duty to eradicate twelve state-declared noxious weeds (field bindweed, Johnson grass, musk thistle, Canada thistle, sericea lespedeza, bur ragweed, hoary cress, leafy spurge, quackgrass, Russian knapweed, kudzu, pignut). The Sedgwick County Public Works Noxious Weed Department inspects complaints, notifies non-compliant owners, and follows up with inspections and treatments.
Nuisance grass/weeds: notice to abate, then county mowing at owner's cost. Noxious weeds: county may treat the land and charge the owner if the state-mandated eradication duty is ignored.
