In unincorporated Kane County, oversized recreational vehicles, ATVs, snowmobiles and inoperable vehicles are tightly regulated. Keeping any inoperable motor vehicle, ATV, boat, camping trailer, motor home, snowmobile or minibike on public or private property is a nuisance unless kept in a building or at a licensed wrecking business (Sec. 15-2(p)).
Sec. 15-2(p) of the Kane County nuisance code bars keeping inoperable vehicles and oversized recreational equipment outdoors. A vehicle counts as inoperable if for more than 14 days its engine, wheels or parts have been removed or altered so it 'is incapable of being driven or operated under its own motor power,' or if it is 'precluded from being driven on the public roadway.' Exceptions: vehicles kept within a building when not in use, operable historic vehicles over 25 years of age kept in a building, and vehicles at a duly licensed wrecking or junking business. A 14-day allowance covers ordinary repairs.
Nuisance under Ch. 15; fine not to exceed $500, and each day the condition exists is a separate offense (Sec. 15-6).
