Movement of oversize or overweight vehicles on unincorporated Riverside County roads requires a permit from the road commissioner under County Code Chapter 10.08. On-street parking of large RVs and heavy commercial vehicles in residential districts is separately restricted by Ordinance 413.
Oversized vehicles are addressed on two fronts in the unincorporated county. First, Riverside County Code Chapter 10.08 (Oversize and Overweight Vehicles) requires a special permit, issued by the road commissioner (the Director of Transportation), to operate a vehicle or move a load that exceeds the statutory limits on size, weight or loading on county roads; moving such a load without first obtaining a permit, or failing to comply with the permit's conditions and rules, is an infraction or misdemeanor under Section 10.08.180. These permits, paralleling Caltrans transportation permits, generally apply to non-reducible loads that cannot be broken down to legal dimensions. Second, the parking of large recreational vehicles and heavy trucks is governed by Ordinance 413: Section 1.18 restricts recreational vehicles (including motorhomes and travel trailers) on residential-district county highways to a limited 48-hour, twice-monthly exception, and Section 1.17 prohibits commercial vehicles over 10,000 pounds GVWR and any commercial trailer from residential streets. Together these mean an oversized RV or truck generally cannot be stored on a residential street, and a wide or heavy load cannot be moved on county roads without a permit. The county does not impose a single blanket 'oversized vehicle' height or length parking standard beyond these provisions.
Moving an oversize or overweight load without a permit is an infraction or misdemeanor under Section 10.08.180. On-street parking violations for large RVs or commercial vehicles are cited under Ordinance 413 Sections 1.18 and 1.17.
