In unincorporated St. Clair County, the zoning ordinance permits one boat and/or one unoccupied camp/utility trailer only in the rear yard or a fully enclosed garage, and it must meet accessory-building yard setbacks. Incorporated cities set their own limits.
St. Clair County's Zoning Ordinance (Sec. 40-5-2) allows parking of no more than one boat and/or one unoccupied camp trailer or utility trailer (not exceeding ten feet wide and thirty-eight feet long) in the rear yard or a completely enclosed garage only. No living quarters or business may be maintained in the trailer, and it must comply with the accessory-building yard requirements of the district. In residential districts (Sec. 40-4 use lists), camp trailers, motor homes, and boats may only be stored in the rear yard, and only in addition to the required off-street parking spaces. City residents (Belleville, O'Fallon, Fairview Heights) follow their own municipal rules.
Zoning violations are enforced by the Zoning Administrator; noncompliant storage can trigger a notice to remove and possible fines under the county zoning ordinance.
