Work generally exempt from permits includes: painting, wallpapering, replacing existing fixtures with similar ones, flooring installation, and minor landscaping. OKC uses the International Building Code and International Residential Code as its adopted building codes. Contractors performing work must hold valid licenses and registrations with the city. Permit applications go through Development Services. Trade permits (electrical, plumbing, mechanical) are required for specialty work. Inspections are required at various stages of construction. Work done without permits can result in stop work orders, fines, and requirements to retroactively obtain permits.
