Seattle allows privacy fences up to 6 feet in residential zones without a building permit. Fences up to 8 feet (with architectural features like trellises) may be permitted. No permit is needed for fences 8 feet or shorter that are not masonry or concrete above 6 feet.
Seattle's fence regulations are managed by SDCI. In neighborhood residential zones (NR1, NR2, NR3), fence height is limited to 6 feet in side and rear yards, with an additional 2 feet allowed for architectural features such as trellises or lattice. Front yard fences are limited to 4 feet in height. No building permit is required for fences 8 feet or shorter, provided they do not have masonry or concrete portions above 6 feet and are not in a flood-prone area. Fences in environmentally critical areas (steep slopes, wetlands, shorelines) may require additional review. Chain-link, wood, vinyl, and composite fences are all permitted. Barbed wire is prohibited in residential zones. Razor wire is prohibited citywide except for certain industrial uses. Property owners must build fences entirely on their own property unless they have a written agreement with the neighboring property owner. The finished side of the fence should face outward as a courtesy, though this is not codified in Seattle's municipal code.
Fences exceeding height limits or in restricted areas may receive a Notice of Violation from SDCI. No permit required for most residential fences.
