Lynn requires owners, managers, and tenants to clear sidewalk snow and ice fast: within 3 hours for commercial and six-plus-unit buildings, and within 10 hours for smaller homes, counting only daylight hours.
Under Lynn's snow and ice removal ordinance (amended 2015), owners, managers, and tenants must clear the sidewalks abutting their property. Commercial buildings and residential buildings of six or more units have 3 hours, counting only sunrise-to-sunset time, after snow or ice stops; purely residential buildings with fewer than six units have up to 10 daylight hours. The full width of the sidewalk must be cleared of snow, slush, and packed or granular ice, and curb cuts, crosswalks, corner ramps, and intersections must be kept clear. Snow and ice may not be pushed or dumped into city streets. The Inspectional Services Department enforces violations.
Non-compliance draws a $50 fine issued by Inspectional Services, which can also arrange clearing. Uncleared walks create slip-and-fall liability. Hearing requests must be filed within 21 days online or in writing.
