The County of Hawai'i provides no curbside collection and no county-issued trash carts in most areas, so it sets no cart-color or container-type rule. Residents self-haul household rubbish to one of the county's 22 recycling and transfer stations, where it must be sorted per station signage.
Unlike mainland cities, Hawai'i County does not issue standardized wheeled bins or run household carts, so there is no ordinance dictating bin type, size, or lid. Hawai'i County Code 20-03-01 instead requires every owner or occupant to dispose of solid waste at a county-approved facility. At the transfer/recycling stations, waste is deposited into county-provided compactors and roll-off boxes, and recyclables must be separated at the marked drop-off bins. Private subscription haulers (where available) supply their own containers under their own rules.
Depositing prohibited materials or unsorted loads can result in denied access; disposing outside an approved facility is unlawful under HCC 20-03-01 and, if dumped, the illegal-dumping penalties apply.
