Under NY Public Health Law and Nassau County guidance, used syringes, lancets, and other sharps generated by home self-care must be placed in rigid puncture-resistant containers and dropped at participating hospitals, NCDOH clinics, or pharmacies enrolled in the NY State sharps collection program. Loose sharps in household garbage or recycling endanger sanitation workers and may trigger a violation under the County solid waste rules. NCDOH publishes a list of free drop-off sites and distributes mail-back containers for residents without nearby options.
Disposing loose sharps in regular trash or public bins can lead to solid-waste fines and, where injuries occur, civil liability for the discarder.
