Chattanooga charges $250 to apply for and renew a homestay STVR certificate and $500 for an absentee STVR. On top of that, guests pay lodging tax: Hamilton County levies a 4% hotel/motel occupancy tax and Chattanooga adds 4%, plus Tennessee's 7% state sales tax and local sales tax.
The county occupancy tax is a privilege tax on transients occupying rooms, levied under the Private Acts of 1980, Chapter 905 (as amended), at 4% of the consideration charged; the City of Chattanooga levies an additional 4%. Combined with the 7% state sales tax and ~2.25% local sales tax, guests in Chattanooga face roughly 17.25% total. Since January 1, 2021, short-term rental marketplaces (such as Airbnb and Vrbo) must collect and remit occupancy tax to the Tennessee Department of Revenue for distribution to the county. Hosts renting outside a marketplace must register and remit the local occupancy tax themselves.
Failure to collect or remit occupancy tax exposes the operator to back taxes, interest, and penalties from the county trustee and the Tennessee Department of Revenue.
