Per the Town of Apple Valley, signs advertising a garage or yard sale on any public street, alley, right-of-way, or publicly owned property are prohibited. Garage sales are limited to three consecutive days, no more than three events per residence per year, and must register with the Town Finance Department. Sign code Ch. 9.74 also bars right-of-way signs.
The Town of Apple Valley prohibits garage and yard sale signs in public areas. According to the Town, signs advertising a garage-yard sale placed on any public street, alley, or right-of-way, or on any publicly owned property, are prohibited; sale signs must be kept on private property. The underlying garage-sale rules limit each residence to three consecutive days per sale and no more than three sale events per calendar year, and require the resident to register the date and time with the Town's Finance Department before the sale. The Town's sign code (Chapter 9.74) reinforces these limits: Section 9.74.050 (Prohibited Signs) bars signs that constitute a hazard to pedestrian or vehicular traffic and "snipe signs" placed in the public right-of-way, and the code generally allows only signs specifically permitted by the chapter. Temporary off-site directional or advertising signs in the public right-of-way are routinely removed by Town staff. Practically, this means a homeowner may post a garage-sale sign on their own property but may not staple it to utility poles, plant it in median strips, or place it at intersection corners in the public right-of-way.
Garage-sale signs placed in the public right-of-way, on utility poles, or on public property are subject to removal and abatement. Holding sales beyond the allowed days/events per year, or failing to register with the Finance Department, can also draw code enforcement.
