Yuba County's sign code has no dedicated garage-sale sign provision. Garage-sale advertising falls under the general small-sign exemption in Development Code 11.27.030(T): up to two signs, each 6 square feet or less and 5 feet or less. The garage sale itself is allowed by right - up to four per site per year, three consecutive days each.
Unincorporated Yuba County does not regulate garage-sale signs as a distinct category in its sign code (Chapter 11.27). The closest applicable exemption is Section 11.27.030(T) (Small Signs): 'All businesses and residences may display up to two signs, each no larger than 6 square feet in area and no higher than five feet,' which covers free-speech, political, religious, and similar incidental residential signage. Temporary off-site directional signs are addressed only for open houses (Section 11.27.030(S)(2)), which allows up to three off-site signs not exceeding four square feet or three feet in height; the open-house rule does not by its terms cover garage sales. Real estate and other signs may not be placed in the public right-of-way. The garage sale itself is regulated as a temporary use under Section 11.32 (Temporary Uses / Garage Sales): 'Garage sales are allowed by right, and require no Zoning Clearance' provided they are conducted by a resident of the premises, the goods are limited to personal property not acquired for resale, 'no more than four garage sales shall be conducted on a site in any calendar year,' 'no single sale event shall be conducted for longer than three consecutive days,' and they occur during daylight hours. Sales exceeding these thresholds are treated as temporary sales events requiring a permit.
Garage-sale signs that exceed the two-sign / 6-square-foot / 5-foot small-sign exemption, or that are placed in the public right-of-way, are unpermitted signs subject to removal under the sign code's illegal-sign provisions. Running more than four garage sales per year, or a single event longer than three consecutive days, converts the activity into a temporary sales event that requires a permit.
