Sonoma Municipal Code §5.08.201.4 prohibits placing any garage, yard or patio sale sign, billboard, placard or other advertisement on any public property within the City, and also prohibits placing such signs on the premises where the sale is being conducted.
Patio, garage, and yard sales in the City of Sonoma are regulated under SMC Chapter 5.08. Section 5.08.201.4 (Patio, garage and yard sales - Advertising) provides that no sign, billboard, placard, or other form of advertisement of the proposed sale shall be placed upon any public property within the city. The same section also prohibits placing such advertising signs on the premises where the sale is to be conducted. In addition, SMC §5.08.201.2 limits sales to no more than once every six months and no longer than two consecutive days. SMC §18.28.036 (general prohibition on signs in public places) reinforces the ban on posting any sign on utility poles, lamp posts, trees, hydrants, sidewalks, or other public fixtures, so the common practice of stapling sale signs to telephone poles is independently prohibited.
Violations of Title 5 business regulations are addressed by City code enforcement; unlawfully posted signs may be removed without notice under SMC Ch. 18.44 and the cost of abatement recovered from the responsible party. Repeated or unresolved violations may escalate to administrative citations through the City of Sonoma Code Enforcement program.
