Ann Arbor regulates temporary signs (including garage-sale signs) by size and time, not content. A temporary freestanding sign may display up to 65 continuous days. Signs may not be placed on trees, utility poles, or in the public right-of-way.
Washtenaw County does not zone land; Ann Arbor's Unified Development Code Section 5.24 governs signs. Garage-sale signs are temporary freestanding signs and are treated content-neutrally. On single- and two-family lots the limits are 20 sq ft total per lot, 12 sq ft per sign, six signs maximum, 6-foot height, and a 5-foot setback. A temporary freestanding sign may be displayed up to 65 continuous days with at least a 30-day gap, or one nonilluminated sign up to 6 sq ft may stay up with no time limit. Signs placed on a tree, utility pole, or structure are prohibited, as are signs erected in the public right-of-way. Ypsilanti and townships set their own sign rules.
Prohibited right-of-way signs may be removed and disposed of by the city without notice; other sign violations are municipal civil infractions with fines.
