In unincorporated Mariposa County, political signs are regulated by County Code section 17.336.060, which applies to political signs countywide. Each political sign may be no larger than 32 square feet, may be placed no sooner than 90 days before an election, and must be removed within 10 days after the election.
Mariposa County Code section 17.336.060 sets the standards that 'shall apply to all political signs throughout Mariposa County, including in planning areas, unless there are specific standards established for a political sign in the adopted area plan for a planning area.' A political sign is defined as one 'intended to encourage a particular vote in a scheduled election,' also called a temporary political sign per section 5405.3 of the State Outdoor Advertising Act. The conditions are: no political sign within the right-of-way of any state highway; none within the easement or right-of-way of, or over any portion of, a county-maintained road; none that impairs traffic safety, sight distance, or traffic flow; none on county property; none placed 'sooner than ninety (90) days prior to the scheduled election'; all political signs 'removed within ten (10) days after the election'; 'No individual political sign shall be larger than thirty-two (32) square feet'; and signs may contain no outline tubing, flashing lights, or moving parts. Signs may only be placed on your own property β the County's zoning ordinance does not allow off-site signs. California Government Code 53074 also generally limits how cities and counties regulate political-sign placement.
Political signs placed in prohibited locations (rights-of-way, county property), oversized, or left up past the 10-day post-election deadline are subject to removal and code enforcement by Mariposa County. Signs in the state highway right-of-way may also be removed by Caltrans.
