Elizabeth Land Development Ordinance Β§15 and Union Township Code Ch. 170-119 permit political/campaign signs on private residential property without a permit. Maximum size is typically 6 sq ft residential / 32 sq ft commercial zones. Signs in the public right-of-way, on utility poles, traffic signs, or public trees are prohibited and subject to immediate removal by Department of Public Works. Most Union County municipalities require removal within 7 to 14 days after the election. Per N.J.S.A. 19:34-6 and Reed v. Town of Gilbert, municipalities cannot apply different durational limits based on sign content. Signs must not obstruct traffic sight triangles at intersections (25 ft clear zone).
