Livonia allows temporary political signs on private property with size limits, subject to content-neutral display windows. No permit is required, but placement in the right-of-way is barred.
The Livonia Sign Ordinance, located in the Zoning Ordinance Article XX, permits temporary political signs on private residential and non-residential property without a permit. Under content-neutral temporary sign rules that comply with Reed v. Town of Gilbert, each residential parcel may display temporary signs of up to 6 square feet and 4 feet in height, and commercial parcels up to 32 square feet. Signs may go up no earlier than the opening of any filing period for an election and must be removed within 7 days after the election. Placement on public property, utility poles, street trees, and in the public right-of-way between the sidewalk and curb is prohibited and subject to removal by DPW. Signs cannot obstruct the clear-vision triangle at intersections or driveways. Illuminated or moving signs are not allowed as temporary displays. Enforcement is complaint-based, with a 72-hour courtesy notice before tickets.
