Temporary political signs are allowed in unincorporated Polk County without a sign permit, but may not be erected earlier than 70 days before the election and must comply with Iowa Code 68A.406.
Article 11 of the Zoning Ordinance lists political signs among the temporary signs exempt from a sign permit. Signs advertising political parties, candidates for election, or ballot issues may be erected, displayed and maintained provided they meet the requirements of State Code 68A.406 and are not put up earlier than 70 days before the election to which they pertain. Iowa Code 68A.406 governs campaign-sign size limits and placement statewide (for example, restrictions on signs in highway rights-of-way). Signs must still observe the ordinance's general placement rules and be removed after the election.
Signs that violate the timing, placement or Iowa Code 68A.406 limits are enforced by Polk County Planning & Development; illegally placed signs in the right-of-way may be removed.
