North Carolina law permits political signs in state highway rights-of-way during election periods with size and timing restrictions.
N.C.G.S. 136-32 authorizes the placement of political signs within the right-of-way of state-maintained roads from the 30th day before early voting begins through the 10th day after Election Day. Signs cannot exceed 864 square inches, must include sponsor identification, cannot obscure traffic signs, and must be placed with permission of any adjacent property owner. Removal of properly placed signs by unauthorized persons is a Class 3 misdemeanor.
Improperly placed or oversized signs may be removed by NCDOT. Stealing or destroying lawful political signs is a Class 3 misdemeanor under state law.
