Georgia Statewide Pool Barrier Code Requirements

Per O.C.G.A. 8-2-20 and the rules of the Department of Community Affairs, Georgia adopts the International Codes including pool barrier provisions. Residential pools deeper than 24 inches require a barrier at least 48 inches high, with no openings exceeding 4 inches. Gates must open outward away from the pool, be self-closing and self-latching, with latches at least 54 inches above grade. Local jurisdictions may adopt stricter requirements but cannot drop below state minimums.

Code violations stop occupancy and trigger fines through local building departments. Civil liability for drownings substantially increases without compliant barriers.
