Indiana Statewide Swimming Pool Barrier Code Requirements

Residential pools deeper than 24 inches must be enclosed by a barrier at least 48 inches high under Indiana Residential Code Section R326, adopted at 675 IAC 14-4.4-38. Gates must open outward, be self-closing and self-latching, and have latches at least 54 inches above grade or otherwise shielded. Public Class A, B, and C pools must be enclosed by a fence, wall, or building at least six feet high under 675 IAC 20-2-26, with self-closing, positive self-latching gates with hardware for locking. Indiana counties may impose stricter standards but cannot reduce these statewide minimums.

Building permits will not be issued for non-compliant pools. Code violations may bring stop-work orders, fines, and civil liability under premises liability if a child is injured.
