Nevada Statewide Swimming Pool Barrier Requirements

Nevada has adopted the International Residential Code (IRC) and International Swimming Pool and Spa Code (ISPSC) as baseline construction standards under NRS 278.580. Appendix G of the IRC and the ISPSC require residential pool barriers at least 60 inches above grade, openings no greater than 4 inches, and self-closing, self-latching gates that open outward from the pool with latches at least 54 inches above ground. Local jurisdictions may strengthen but generally cannot weaken these life-safety standards. Drowning prevention is also addressed by federal Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act for public pools.

Building code violations result in stop-work orders, civil penalties, and required corrective construction. Liability for child drownings can expand under attractive-nuisance doctrine.
