Nevada Pool Safety Drain Cover and Suction Rules

Nevada's Division of Public and Behavioral Health regulates public pools under NRS 444.065 through 444.075 and NAC 444.040 et seq. All public pools and spas must have anti-entrapment drain covers compliant with ASME/ANSI A112.19.8 and either dual main drains, safety vacuum release systems, or unblockable drain configurations per the federal VGB Act. Public pool operators must maintain water chemistry, depth markings, lifeguard or 'No Lifeguard' signage, and emergency phones. Annual permits and inspections are required. Residential pool owners are encouraged but not legally required to retrofit drain covers under state law. Local health districts in Clark and Washoe Counties handle enforcement.

Operating a non-compliant public pool can result in immediate closure, permit revocation, civil penalties up to $1,000 per day, and potential criminal liability for knowing violations causing injury.
