Because Mariposa County is mostly self-haul, there is no universal curbside set-out schedule. Code Chapter 8.36 governs container placement: collector containers of one cubic yard or more must be marked with the servicing agent's name and phone, and no one may use or dump in a container not provided for them.
Mariposa County's self-haul system means most properties do not set bins at the curb on a fixed schedule. Where collection service exists, County Code Section 8.36.030(D) makes the collection operator responsible for planning with the property owner or occupant on 'placement of storage containers to minimize traffic, aesthetic and other problems both on the property and for the general public.' Section 8.36.030(G) requires that collector-owned containers of one cubic yard or larger be identified with the name and telephone number of the servicing agent. Section 8.36.030(I) prohibits any person from tampering with, modifying, removing from, or depositing waste in a container that was not provided for their use without the owner's permission. Section 8.36.080(A) says container locations are set by agreement between the customer and collector, with disputes resolved by the County health department. The code also bars collectors and franchise holders from using firm names that include 'county' or 'Mariposa' (Section 8.36.030(H)). For self-haul residents, the practical rule is the storage standard of Section 8.36.030: keep containers safe, sanitary, vector-resistant, and not creating a nuisance for neighbors, rather than a curb-day placement requirement.
Tampering with or using another's container, or improper container identification, violates Chapter 8.36 and is a misdemeanor under Chapter 1.20.
