Lake County does not run countywide trash collection; pickup is arranged through your city/town or a private hauler. The Lake County Solid Waste Management District (LCSWMD) coordinates waste reduction, education, and special drop-off programs rather than curbside routes.
Unlike some counties, Lake County has no single county garbage utility. In incorporated cities and towns, the municipality provides or contracts collection; in unincorporated areas, residents subscribe to a private hauler. The LCSWMD, created February 5, 1991 after the Indiana Legislature enacted House Bill 1240 requiring counties to form solid waste management districts, focuses on education, recycling assistance, and special collections (household hazardous waste, tires, appliances, electronics, latex paint, leaf/compost), plus recycling grants to municipalities. For weekly trash days, set-out times, and container rules, follow your hauler or city schedule.
Missed-pickup and container disputes are handled by the hauler or municipality; illegal disposal of waste instead of using service is enforced under the county illegal-dumping chapter and state law.
