Under Houston Code Chapter 39 (Solid Waste and Litter Control), the City provides curbside collection of garbage, recycling, and yard waste for single-family residential properties. The 96-gallon automated container (black for garbage, green for recycling) must be placed at the curb by 7:00 AM on collection day and retrieved by 10:00 PM. Garbage is collected weekly; recycling is collected every other week. Yard waste is collected on the same day as garbage. Residents can use 100% biodegradable or compostable bags meeting ASTM D6400 or EN 13432 specifications for yard waste. Containers must not be overfilled and lids must close fully. Collection schedules are available through the Solid Waste Management Department website or 3-1-1.
Improper placement or overfilled bins may result in non-collection. Litter and illegal dumping violations under Chapter 39 carry fines.
