DSNY collects residential trash, recyclables, and organics on a set schedule by address. Admin Code Β§16-120 governs waste set-out times and container requirements. NYC is transitioning to containerized collection under the Clean Containers program. Commercial waste is handled by private carters regulated by the Business Integrity Commission.
NYC DSNY provides curbside collection for residential waste (trash, recycling, and organics) on a regular schedule that varies by address. Residents can check their collection schedule at the DSNY website. As of the containerization rollout, residential trash in 1-9 unit buildings must be placed in rigid containers with tight-fitting lids set out no earlier than 8 PM the night before collection. Recycling follows a separate schedule with designated pickup days for paper/cardboard and metal/glass/plastic. Organics collection (brown bin) is now mandatory citywide. Large buildings (10+ units) may use compactors and have different collection arrangements. DSNY does not collect construction debris, hazardous waste, or electronics curbside β these require special disposal. Commercial waste collection is handled by private carting companies licensed by the NYC Business Integrity Commission (BIC), not DSNY. The Commercial Waste Zone program divides the city into zones with designated carters to reduce truck traffic and emissions.
Setting out waste at wrong time: $50β$100. Mixing recyclables with trash: $25 first offense (warning), then $100β$300. Failure to separate organics: $25 (after warning period). Commercial waste violations: BIC enforcement with higher penalties.
