Boulder City offers a voluntary curbside recycling program through Public Works. Recycling is not mandated by city code. Southern Nevada recycles fewer materials than other regions due to limited end markets.
Boulder City Municipal Code does not mandate residential recycling, but the city offers voluntary curbside recycling service through Public Works as part of its solid-waste program. Accepted materials typically include aluminum and steel cans, clean cardboard and paper, plastic bottles and jugs numbered 1 and 2, and clear and colored glass bottles and jars in separate collection in some programs. Like most Southern Nevada jurisdictions, Boulder City participates in a limited single-stream or dual-stream system reflecting regional market conditions. Items commonly rejected include plastic bags and film (take to grocery store drop-off), styrofoam, food-soiled paper, small mixed plastics, and electronics. Contamination rates in Southern Nevada have historically been a problem, so residents are asked to keep materials clean, dry, and loose rather than bagged. Electronics and e-waste are handled through occasional community drop-off events. The Republic Services materials recovery facility at Apex in North Las Vegas processes much of the regional recycling stream. Nevada has no statewide bottle bill, and no Boulder City mandate on commercial recycling applies generally to small businesses, though some larger facilities may participate voluntarily. Recycling carts, when provided, follow the same bin placement rules as trash carts.
Recycling is voluntary in Boulder City. Contamination can cause a whole cart to be rejected, with the resident receiving a tag explaining the issue. Repeat contamination can lead to suspension of recycling service for that address at the hauler discretion.
