Under Pennsylvania's Act 101, recycling is mandatory in covered communities. In Allentown, all entities in the Curbside Collection Program must source-separate designated recyclables β glass, aluminum and other listed materials β into a recycling container.
Pennsylvania's Municipal Waste Planning, Recycling and Waste Reduction Act (Act 101 of 1988) requires larger and designated municipalities to recycle, and Lehigh County maintains a countywide solid-waste plan under it. Allentown's residential recycling ordinance (Chapter 525) requires that all entities included in the City Curbside Collection Program source-separate all designated recyclable materials and commingle them into a recycling container in the manner designated, then place them for collection as directed. Designated materials include glass containers, aluminum and bimetal cans, newspapers, and plastic containers, among others set by regulation. Recycling must not be bagged in plastic.
Failing to separate designated recyclables, or mixing them with trash, is a violation of Allentown Chapter 525 and can result in rejected collection and citation.
