Hudson County, NJ Tree Protection: Heritage & Protected Trees (2026)

Hudson County does not have a countywide heritage/landmark tree program comparable to some California jurisdictions. Jersey City Ordinance Chapter 345 and Hoboken Ordinance §165 provide de facto heritage protection through size-based enhanced penalty structures — trees over 18-24 inches DBH trigger higher replacement ratios and larger fines based on ISA (International Society of Arboriculture) appraisal methods. The Shade Tree Commissions in both Jersey City and Hoboken maintain inventories of notable trees and historic plantings, particularly in Van Vorst Park, Hamilton Park (Jersey City), Church Square Park, and Stevens Park (Hoboken). Liberty State Park's NJ DEP management includes several heritage-class trees around the Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal. Construction projects in Jersey City's historic districts must submit tree preservation plans to HPC. Protected trees during construction require root zone barriers, typically at the dripline. Damage during construction (trenching through roots, compaction, chemical harm) triggers fines plus required remediation by certified arborist. Residents can nominate significant trees through the Shade Tree Commission process.
