The LA County Oak Tree Permit Ordinance encourages replanting and propagation of oak trees. When oak tree removal is approved, replacement planting conditions may be imposed. LA County Planning is updating the ordinance to further encourage planting new oak trees and redesigning projects to preserve existing trees.
The LA County Oak Tree Permit Ordinance encourages replanting and propagation of native oaks. When oak tree removal is approved, replacement planting is required at ratios ranging from 2:1 (for minor impacts) to 10:1 (for significant trees or unauthorized removal). Replacement trees must be the same species or an approved native oak species. Trees must be 15-gallon size minimum with irrigation systems. A 5-year maintenance and monitoring period is required with annual reports to the Department of Regional Planning. In-lieu fees may be accepted in rare cases when on-site planting is infeasible.
Failure to complete required replacement planting within the specified timeline is a violation of the Oak Tree Permit conditions. The permit can be revoked, triggering additional penalties. Failure to maintain replacement trees during the 5-year monitoring period results in requirements to replant failed trees. Bonds or deposits may be required to ensure compliance.
