Oak trees β₯36 inches in diameter qualify as Heritage Oaks under LA County Code Chapter 22.174 and receive heightened review. Removal is rarely approved.
Within Chapter 22.174, oaks of 36 inches diameter or greater are considered Heritage Oaks. Applications for removal or significant impact require additional findings by the Director and may trigger Planning Commission review. Replacement ratios are higher (often 4:1 or greater) and an in-lieu fee may apply if on-site replacement is infeasible. The Altadena CSD encourages preservation of mature trees (Section 22.306.060.D.2 for designated historic properties).
Unpermitted Heritage Oak removal triggers enhanced penalties under 22.174.080 β fines and replacement value can exceed $10,000 per tree based on appraised value.
